Old Ordnance Survey Inch to the Mile Maps

  • These maps normally cover an area of about 18 miles by 12 miles and are especially good at showing railways, roads and canals, and at giving a broad view of a wider area. Each includes an introduction and a more detailed map of a small town or village. They are available through our On-line Mapshop

  • Here is information about Sheet 285:

  • One Inch Sheet 285 North West Surrey 1888 - published 1998; intro by John Griffiths. ISBN.978-0-85054-950-8

This early Inch to the Mile map covers much of west Surrey, with Guildford near the centre of the map and the Hampshire garrison towns of Aldershot and Farnborough to the west. Coverage stretches from Farnham and Aldershot Common eastward to East Horsley and Hackhurst Downs, and from Camberley southward to Godalming. Features include North Camp and South Camp near Aldershot, Chobham Ridge, the Basingstoke Canal, Woking Convict Prison, Brookwood Lunatic Asylum, Albury Park and much more. On the reverse we include a map showing part of Worplesdon, with a directory for that village.

It is not possible to list the many hamlets, farmsteads and other topographical features shown on these maps. However, you may find it useful if we list the towns and principal villages or parishes that are included on this map:

  • Hampshire: Aldershot, Farnborough, North Camp, South Camp.
  • Surrey: Albury, Ash, Bisley, Bramley, Brookwood, Byfleet, Compton, East Clandon, East Horsley, Elstead, Farnham, Frimley, Godalming, Guildford, Horsell, Merrow, Normandy, Ockham, Pepeharow, Pirbright, Puttenham, Pyrford, Ripley, Seale, Send, Shalford, Shere, St Martha, Wanborough, West Clandon, West Horsley, Woking, Wonersh, Worplesdon.
