Old Ordnance Survey Inch to the Mile Maps

  • These maps normally cover an area of about 18 miles by 12 miles and are especially good at showing railways, roads and canals, and at giving a broad view of a wider area. Each includes an introduction and a more detailed map of a small town or village. They are available through our On-line Mapshop

  • Here is information about Sheet 239:

  • One Inch Sheet 239 Hertford & St Albans 1898 - published 2009; intro by Barrie Trinder. ISBN.978-1-84784-235-0

This Inch to the Mile map covers a large area of central and SE Hertfordshire, with coverage stretching from Harpenden eastward to Stanstead Abbots, and from Woolmer Greeen southward to Potters Bar. Several towns are shown: Harpenden, Hatfield, Hertford, St Albans, Waltham Abbey (in the SE corner) while part of Middlesex encroaches onto the southern section of the map. On the reverse we include a detailed map of Welwyn village, including Lockleys Park.

It is not possible to list the many hamlets, farmsteads and other topographical features shown on these maps. However, you may find it useful if we list the towns and principal villages or church parishes that are included on this map:

  • Esex: Waltham Abbey.
  • Hertfordshire: Ayot St Lawrence, Ayot St Peter, Bengeo, Bramfield, Broxbourne, Cheshunt, Colney Heath, Digswell, Harpenden, Hatfield, Hertford, Hertinfordbury, Hoddesden, Kimpton, London Colney, North Mimms, Northaw, Ridge, Sandridge, Shenley, St Albans, St Andrew, Stanstead Abbots, Stanstead St Margarets, Stapleford, Tewin, Thundridge, Waltham Cross, Ware, Welwyn, Wheathampstead, Wormley.
