Old Ordnance Survey Inch to the Mile Maps

  • These maps normally cover an area of about 18 miles by 12 miles and are especially good at showing railways, roads and canals, and at giving a broad view of a wider area. Each includes an introduction and a more detailed map of a small town or village. They are available through our On-line Mapshop

  • Here is information about Sheet 4:

  • One Inch Sheet 4a Holy Island & District 1863 - published 1997; intro by John Griffiths. ISBN.978-0-85054-872-3
  • One Inch Sheet 4b Holy Island & Seahouses 1898 - Coloured Edition - published 2008; intro by David Butler. ISBN,978-1-84784-121-6

We have published two versions of this map, showing how the area developed across the years. The 1898 version is colour printed.

Both maps cover the same area, stretching from Holy Island southward to Beadnell Bay, and westward to Wooler. They also includes the Farne Islands, Seahouses, Bamburgh and Chillingham. On the reverse of the 1863 map is a detailed large scale map of Holy Island village, together with a directory; on the reverse of the 1898 version is a map of Seahouses, including part of North Sunderland.

It is not possible to list the many hamlets, farmsteads and other topographical features shown on these maps. However, you may find it useful if we list the towns and principal villages or church parishes that are included on this map. Links are given for those for which detailed large-scale maps are also available.

  • Northumberland: Bamburgh, Beadnell, Beal, Belford, Chatton, Chillingham, Doddington, Ellingham, Farne Islands, Haggerston Castle, Holy Island, Lowick, North Sunderland, Seahouses, Wooler.
