Old Ordnance Survey Maps of Selkirkshire
This page summarises the local government organisation of Selkirkshire since 1890.
Selkirkshire was one of Scotland's 34 historic counties before 1890, and it was
largely unchanged by the general reorganisation to 33 counties that took place that year, though some exclaves (detached portions) in Peeblesshire and Roxburghshire
were redistributed.
In 1890 Selkirkshire had the following Burghs: Selkirk (a royal burgh), Galashiels. The county town was Selkirk.
In 1975 there was major reorganisation as the counties were abolished and replaced by 12 Regions. Selkirkshire was amalgamated with
Berwickshire, Peeblesshire and Roxburghshire into the new Scottish Borders Region.
This was a two-tier council, with four districts: Berwickshire, Ettrick & Lauderdale, Roxburgh, and Tweeddale. Selkirkshire became part of the new Ettrick & Lauderdale District, though
this also took over portions of the former Berwickshire, including Lauder; Roxburghshire, including Melrose; and part of Midlothian.
In 1996 there was further reorganisation as the Regions were abolished and replaced by 32 Unitary councils. Scottish Borders became a unitary
council and the districts were abolished. Five committee areas were formed, and the former Ettrick & Lauderdale District area became the
Eildon committee area.
