Old Ordnance Survey Inch to the Mile Maps

  • These maps normally cover an area of about 18 miles by 12 miles and are especially good at showing railways, roads and canals, and at giving a broad view of a wider area.   • One Inch Sheet 330 The Solent 1888 - published 1999; intro by Jude James. ISBN.978-1-84151-115-3

    This early Inch to the Mile map covers the Solent area, with a stretch of Hampshire to the north, the Isle of Wight to the south. Coverage stretches from Milton eastward to Fawley on the Hampshire side, and from The Needles eastward to Newport, and southward to Gatcombe, on the Isle of Wight. Features include Beaulieu Heath, Rhinefield Walk, Parkhurst Forest, while transport historians will enjoy the many long lost railways on the Isle of Wight. On the reverse we include an extract from Hampshire Sheet 81.01, covering the village of Beaulieu in detail, including the Abbey, together with a directory.

    It is not possible to list the many hamlets, farmsteads and other topographical features shown on these maps. However, you may find it useful if we list the towns and principal villages or church parishes that are included on this map. Links are given for those for which detailed large-scale maps are also available.
