Old Ordnance Survey Inch to the Mile Maps

  • These maps normally cover an area of about 18 miles by 12 miles and are especially good at showing railways, roads and canals, and at giving a broad view of a wider area.     This One Inch to the Mile map straddles the border between Norfolk and Suffolk, with coverage stretching from Feltwell and Lakenheath eastward to Bridgham and Knettishall, and from Methwold southward to Barningham, which is in the SE corner. This is an area known as Breckland, a name coined in the 1890s by the naturalist W G Clarke. This was a remote and thinly populated district, and at its centre is Thetford, once a cathedral city and the sixth largest town in Saxon England, but by 1907 a 'sleepy backwater' according to our author, Alan Crosby. Notable features on the map are areas of parkland, such as Shadwell Park, Euston Park, Wretham Park, Buckenham Tofts Park etc. and there are still areas of undeveloped heathland such as Lakenheath Warren and Bridgham Heath. On the back we include a detailed map of Lakenheath, with directory.

    It is not possible to list the many hamlets, farmsteads and other topographical features shown on these maps. However, you might find it useful if we here list the majority of the principal villages and church parishes that are included on this map. Links are given for those for which detailed large-scale maps are also available.
