Old Ordnance Survey Inch to the Mile Maps

  • These maps normally cover an area of about 18 miles by 12 miles and are especially good at showing railways, roads and canals, and at giving a broad view of a wider area. Each includes an introduction and a more detailed map of a small town or village. They are available through our On-line Mapshop

  • Here is information about Sheet 136:

  • One Inch Sheet 136 Lake Vyrnwy & Bala 1904 - published 2002; intro by Derrick Pratt. ISBN.978-1-84151-426-0

Two landscape features dominate this Inch to the Mile Map: to the north Bala Lake or Llyn Tegid, and to the south, Lake Vyrnwy, a great reservoir created in the valley and completed in 1891. Coverage of the map stretches from Drws-y-Nant station eastward to Pen-y-bont Fawr, and from Bala and Llandderfel station southward to Llanwddyn. As Derrick Pratt says, "most of the map is taken up with the backbone of the Berwyn Mountains, desolate, thinly populated moorlands" but the map also shows a long stretch of the Bala & Dolgelley line, and the final few miles of the Tanat Valley Railway. On the back we include an extract from Montgomery Sheet 4.12, showing Llangynog in detail, including the inclines up to the Craig Rhiwarth Slate Quarries.

It is not possible to list the many hamlets, farmsteads and other topographical features shown on these maps. However, you may find it useful if we list the towns and principal villages or church parishes that are included on this map. Links are given for those for which detailed large-scale maps are also available.

  • Merioneth: Bala, Llanfor, Llangower, Llanuwchllyn, Llanycil.
  • Montgomeryshire: Hirnant, Llangynog, Llanwddyn.
