Old Ordnance Survey Inch to the Mile Maps

  • These maps normally cover an area of about 18 miles by 12 miles and are especially good at showing railways, roads and canals, and at giving a broad view of a wider area. Each includes an introduction and a more detailed map of a small town or village. They are available through our On-line Mapshop

  • Here is information about Sheet 68:

  • One Inch Sheet 68 Pendle 1896 - published 2000; intro by Paul Hindle. ISBN.978-1-84151-138-2

This title, at an Inch to the Mile, shows a map of contrasts. Along the lower part of the map are many of the major mill towns of east Lancashire, while above them are Pendle Hill, the Forest of Pendle, the Forest of Trawden and, in the top left corner, Easington Fell. The map is split almost 50-50 between Lancashire and Yorkshire but virtually all the towns are in Lancashire; the one Yorkshire town, Barnoldswick, has since been transferred to Lancashire. Coverage of the map stretches from Stonyhurst College, Billington and Whalley eastward to Colne and beyond, and from Burnley northward to Gisburn. On the reverse is a detailed map of Whalley.

It is not possible to list the many hamlets, farmsteads and other topographical features shown on these maps. However, you may find it useful if we list the towns and principal villages or church parishes that are included on this map. Links are given for those for which detailed large-scale maps are also available.

  • Lancashire: Barrowford, Billington, Brierfield, Burnley, Chatburn, Clitheroe, Colne, Habergham Eaves, Hindle Fold, Lowerhouse, Nelson, Padiham, Read, Sabden, Whalley.
  • Yorkshire: Barnoldswick, Bashall Eaves, Bolton by Bowland, Bracewill, Broughton, Carlton, Earby, Gisburn, Great Mitton, Lothersdale, Salterforth, Thornton, Waddington.
