Old OS Town Plans of Manchester


  • For a few areas of Liverpool and Manchester we have also reprinted some of the very early Five-foot plans. Originally published at a scale of 1:1056 or 5 feet to the mile, we have reduced them in scale to 1:1760 or a Yard to the Mile. The maps, though covering quite a small area, are quite wonderfully detailed, showing such features as capstans and mooring posts, lamp-posts, the layouts of back yards, and even the interior of certain buildings such as churches. For the urban historian they are perhaps the most fascinating maps ever published by the Ordnance Survey.

  • Manchester & Salford Sheet 23 Manchester Victoria 1849 - published 1987, 2nd edition 2024; intro by Alan Godfrey. ISBN.978-1-78721-803-1

    This wonderfully detailed map covers the area of Manchester around the Cathedral, with a significant portion of Salford west of the River Irwell. Coverage stretches from Garden Lane eastward to Ducie Street and from New Bridge Street southward to Cannon Street.

    Major features (several including interior layouts), include Victoria Station, Manchester Cathedral, Withy Grove, Chetham Hospital, Hanging Ditch, Manchester Union Workhouse, Walker's Croft Cemetery, LNWR railway with engine house, Gravel Lane Chapel, Trinity church, King Street Iron Works, Salford Union Workhouse, Green Gate Mills etc.

    On the reverse we include 10 foot to the mile sheet 104.6.15 covering the east end of Victoria station and surrounding area in 1889.

    The map links up with Manchester Sheets 22 Salford Adelphi to the west, 24 New Cross to the east and 28 Manchester City Centre to the south.
