Old Ordnance Survey Maps of Angus
This page summarises the local government organisation of Forfarshire and Angus since 1890.
Forfarshire was one of Scotland's historic counties in 1890. It was renamed Angus in 1928 and is now a unitary council. Dundee became a County of a City in 1894.
Dundee, a royal burgh, became a County of a City in 1894 and so became independent of Forfarshire.
The other royal burghs in 1890 were: Arbroath, Brechin, Forfar, Montrose.
The ordinary burghs were: Broughty Ferry, Carnoustie, Kirriemuir, Monifieth. Broughty Ferry was absorbed by Dundee in 1913.
In 1890 the area around Coupar Angus was transferred to Perthshire.
In 1928 the name of the county was changed to Angus.
In 1975 there was major reorganisation as the counties were abolished and replaced by 12 Regions. Angus was merged with Dundee, Kinross-shire and most of Perthshire into
the new Tayside Region.
This was a two-tier administration with three Districts: Angus, City of Dundee, and Perth & Kinross.
In 1996 there was further reorganisation as the Regions and Districts were abolished and replaced by 32 unitary councils. Tayside Region was abolished and the
three Districts became unitary councils. For Perth & Kinross see our Perthshire page
